The Big Blue Book of Dance Drugs (1992)

The original Big Blue Book was called ’The Big Blue Book of Dance Drugs’. It started life as a commission for a drugs awareness week for BBC Radio 1. We were given ten days to write and design it. Mark Gilman wrote the text and I edited it, illustrated it and glued all the drawings and text onto art-board (before the days of computer design). In those days, I would produced a mock-up and colour it in in pencil so that a printer would be able to make the four coloured plates. I decided to call it the Big Blue Book because it was both Big (well the biggest thing we had done up until that point) and the cover was blue.
Despite giving us ten days to produce the whole thing, and despite reassurances to the contrary, it took the BBC several months and numerous committee stages to approve the book (it missed their drug awareness week). At one point it even went through the BBC pronunciation department who suggested a line should be changed to read ‘to get off ones face’. Despite the nervousness of the BBC, our version of the book sold in huge quantities for many years.
